Science and technology are evolving at unprecedented rates, and just when you realized Botox was as ubiquitous as Starbucks, researchers have discovered a new, toxin-free wrinkle treatment. The new nerve-freezing treatment has been named cryoneuromodulation by MyoScience Inc., its creators, and has been shown to be as effective and safe as current wrinkle treatments on the market in early clinical trials.
Bloomberg Businessweek cited study co-author Francis Palmer, director of facial plastic surgery at the University of Southern California School of Medicine in Los Angeles, as saying, “To do the procedure, physicians use small needles — “cryoprobes” — to deliver cold to nerves running through the forehead, specifically the temporal branch of the frontal nerve. The cold freezes the nerve, which interrupts the nerve signal and relaxes the muscle that causes vertical and horizontal forehead lines.”
Although the cold temporarily “injures” the nerve, it does not permanently damage it. While researchers are not yet certain how long the effects will last, .
trials suggest it is comparable to Botox, which lasts for about three to four months. Palmer added, “Physicians would need training to identify the nerve that should be targeted.” The treatment takes about 15-minutes under local anesthesia, and is currently only being researched for use on forehead wrinkles, though studies on other areas of the face are planned.
